Machines used to transport or modify building materials or auxiliary building materials are termed construction machines. They are either stationary, mobile or semi-mobile and equipped with combustion or electric motors.

Construction machines are not only employed in the construction industry but, for example, also in the agricultural sector, on rubbish tips, landfill sites or coal mining. They are divided into various categories: earth moving machines (stationary excavators, mobile excavators, flat excavators), drilling and slotted wall machines, transport equipment, lifting gear, pile driving and pulling appliances, road construction machines, compactors, tunnel construction machines, compressors and cleaning equipment. Machines and equipment for transportation and processing of concrete and mortar as well as for sewer and pipeline construction are also included.
